You may not feel comfortable with your investments or about your finances in general. It feels a little bit intimidating to ask your advisor about the average duration of your bond fund portfolio. Or asking what is the average credit rating? That question alone is a smart question.

If you do not feel you are comfortable reading the financial statements, then you can read the person that is giving you the answer. What do I mean by this?

It’s interesting, the sharper people are, the more deliberate attention they get. For example, you have a loved one that is in a nursing home that you visit every day. This suggests you are paying attention to what is happening. Somehow the care ends up being just a little bit more attentive. Or if you have a doctor in your family and the doctor shows up while you are in the hospital. The doctor asks pertinent questions of the staff. Even though staff always want to be very vigilant, there is just a little bit more attention under these circumstances.

When you ask your financial professional applicable questions, this is giving attention to things that are important in your bond portfolio. That’s all. You are being your own advocate.
